In the last couple of years, the outdoor industry has witnessed an insurgency of women demanding to be recognized. This was seen with the advent of magazines like Misadventures, movements like REI’s Force of Nature, groups like SheJumps, and events like Outessa, just to name a few.

In 2017, REI conducted a nationwide study about women and the outdoors. Their findings are disheartening but not surprising. Here’s what they found:

  • 63% of women said they could not think of an outdoor female role model
  • 6 in 10 women said that men’s interests in outdoor activities are taken more seriously than women’s
  • 74% of women said they see the outdoors as a place where they're free from the pressures of everyday life
  • 72% of women said they feel liberated or free when they are outdoors

Enter: Misadventures Magazine. A female-center publication that was founded out of frustration. A group of adventurous women had enough of not seeing themselves represented in outdoor magazines nor traditional women’s magazines. In 2013, Misadventures Magazine was born. The publication offers 2 journal-style issues per year. Each issue has 80 pages packed with incredible outdoor and adventure content written for women by women.

Readers are treated to page after page of stunning photographs and creative, engaging writing. Content for the magazine includes adventure, inspiring feats, images of wildly beautiful places, historical essays, recipes, educational pieces, and stories of discovery. It’s no surprise that Misadventures Magazine has a dedicated readership. The magazine was recognized by the Library Journal as one of The Ten Best Magazines of 2016 and received numerous other awards and accolades.




The publication could not have picked a better time to hop into the arena of improving gender equality. Since the magazine began there has been a surge in women-centric outdoor companies, organizations, and events. It appears that women’s efforts are paying off with the recent improvement of gender equality in the outdoor space. As REI president and CEO said, “the outdoors is—and should always be—the world’s largest level playing field.”

So how do we change the tide? By supporting women-centric outdoor organizations like Misadventures magazine. A rising tide lifts all boats -- and the tide is rising ladies. Each issue of the magazine is created with the intent to be a champion for women “who embrace cre­ativ­ity, take risks, and go out and beyond.” It’s no secret that there is a gender gap when it comes to recognition in the outdoor space, and Misadventures has made it their mission to fill that gap.
