Hiking in the summer: there’s nothing like it. The warm sunshine, birds chirping, light breeze blowing, and a babbling brook -- it's darn near paradise. Done right, hiking in the summer can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the summer season. But if done wrong or ill-equipped, it can be downright dreadful. To make your hikes this summer more enjoyable, make sure you have the right gear. Here are 4 pieces of gear that are sure to make your hikes more enjoyable this summer.

Keep the sun off your face with a light summer hat

As you hike, the sun beats down on the trail. Keep the sun off your face with a hat. Pick one with a wide brim to keep the sun off your face, ears, and neck for a more comfortable hike throughout the day. Topo-Designs-Nylon-Camp-Hat-Grid-Olive-2__24330.1493683796.1280.1280.jpg

We like the Nylon Camp Hat for its breathability, quick-dry capabilities, yet crucial sun coverage. See the hat here. Click here to see our full range of outdoor hats.

Stay cool in the heat with wicking fabrics

One of the biggest factors for staying comfortable on the trail is your choice of outfit. Pick something that's comfortable yet acceptable enough for the post-hike brewpub visit. Wear a sweat wicking t-shirt with lightweight shorts (or pants), and sweat-wicking underwear. All of this will help you stay cool in the summer sun and will cut down on that nasty chaffing.

For men, the sweat-wicking wool in United by Blue's Banff shirt will be great from those early morning and evening hikes. See the shirt here.

For women, the linen fabric of Taylor Stitch's Katherine Shirt is a great summer go-to. See the shirt here.

Keep the important things on you with a light trail-specific day pack

Grab a bag and stuff it with essentials like trail snacks, water, sunblock, a camera, and bug repellant. It’s impossible to carry all of those essentials in your arms and still enjoy your hike... Unless you’re a divine creature with a multitude of arms and no qualms with full hands. In that case you don’t need a bag.

The Topo Designs Trip Pack is a perfect trail companion. See the pack here.

Stay dry when it pours with a go-to adventure jacket

Summer weather can be fickle. One minute the sun’s out without a cloud in the sky and the next minute you’re getting soaked. Prepare for any unpleasant experience and bring a raincoat with you. Hopefully you won’t need it, but you’ll be glad you brought it when you’re staying dry in the rain.

The Free Fly Bamboo-Lined Crossover Jacket is a great option for any action. See the Crossover here.
